چکیده

Sympatric coastrange sculpin, Cottus aleuticus, and prickly sculpin, C. asper, occupied distinct habitats in the mainstem Smith River, northwestern California. For example, 90% of coastrange sculpin (n = 294) used habitat with water velocity > 5 cm s, whereas 89% of prickly sculpin (n = 981) used habitat with water velocity ≤ 5 cm s. Sixty-five percent of coastrange sculpin were found at depths < 1 m, whereas 37% of prickly sculpin occupied depths > 7 m. The strong spatial separation of coastrange and prickly sculpin in the mainstem Smith River contrasts with the overlap in their use of habitat in the nearby Eel River. Differences between the rivers in habitat availability, intensity of piscivory, and density of sculpins may contribute to this contrast.

Effects of an introduced piscivorous fish on native benthic fishes in a coastal river

1. We used field surveys to compare the density and mesohabitat-scale distribution of the native coastrange sculpin (Cottus aleuticus) and the prickly sculpin (C. asper) in coastal rivers in north-western California, U.S.A., with and without an introduced piscivorous fish, the Sacramento pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus grandis. We also measured mortality of tethered prickly sculpin in a field experim...

Comparison of Diets of Prickly Sculpin and Juvenile Fall-run Chinook Salmon in the Lower Mokelumne River, California

I compared diets of prickly sculpin, Cottus asper, and juvenile fall-run chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, in the lower Mokelumne River, California, from January through June during 1998 and 1999. Prickly sculpin fed primarily on chironomid (Diptera) larvae and hydroptilid and hydropsychid (Trichoptera) larvae. Juvenile chinook salmon fed on zooplankton, plus chironomid, hydroptilid, an...

Effects of Salmon-Derived Nutrients and Habitat Characteristics on Population Densities of Stream-Resident Sculpins

Movement of nutrients across ecosystem boundaries can have important effects on food webs and population dynamics. An example from the North Pacific Rim is the connection between productive marine ecosystems and freshwaters driven by annual spawning migrations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp). While a growing body of research has highlighted the importance of both pulsed nutrient subsidies ...

Freshwater Fish Inventory of the Alagnak Watershed, Alagnak Wild River, Southwest Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network

A freshwater fish inventory was conducted from March through August, 2002 in the Alagnak Watershed. The objectives of the inventory were (1) to document species that were expected yet undocumented and (2) to provide initial descriptions of the distributions, abundance, and biologic characteristics of these species. Minnow traps, minnow seines, beach seines, snorkel gear, hand nets, fyke nets, t...

Summer Stream Temperatures Influence Sculpin Distributions and Spatial Partitioning in the Upper Clark Fork River Basin, Montana

The upper Clark Fork River basin of western Montana supports a poorly understood sculpin (Uranidea spp.) fauna that has perplexed ichthyologists and fish ecologists since the late 1800s. During our study, the basin contained three sculpin taxa whose taxonomy was under revision. All three taxa were formerly referred to the genus Cottus but are now treated as Uranidea. Our goal was to improve und...
